John has continued the effort in catching storm petrels at Whitburn this summer. Results so far are surprising with only a dozen trapped since the beginning of June compared a usual year of 50+ birds by now. On the brighter side, John got a little shock when a large petrel was observed fluttering by the net. John caught the petrel by hand and identified it as a Leaches Petrel. A first ringed at Whitburn. A second un-ringed Leaches Petrel was trapped on the following night.
I bet John felt more chuffed than if he'd won an Olympic gold!
